A private contemporary subterranean extension to a historic early 19th-century estate, featuring a 25m indoor-outdoor pool activated by a sliding glass wall. A rising pool floor provides an outdoor terrace when the facility is not in use. The interiors are flooded with natural daylight via a series of walk-on rooflights, including a large structural glass skylight spanning the width of the pool.
Access is through a wide glass opening, where a generous landing and wide steps lead towards the hot tub. Flanked on either side by a bar and lounge area, the pool extends along the length of the space beyond. Changing facilities are located to either side of the steps.
An existing lightwell was modified and reimagined as a sunken courtyard to provide additional daylight and outdoor space to the lounge area, pool, gym, and treatment room. Positioned as a distinct volume at the end of the pool, the hammam leaves a gap below the ceiling, allowing natural light to flow over the structure into the gym. Set a few steps lower, it features a large frameless glazed panel that allows views both above and below the waterline, while the gym also features its own dedicated skylights.
